Upper Camp

“Up, up and away!”

When I moved from Junior Camp to Upper Camp, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to handle it, but within a few hours I was having so much fun all of my fears melted away. Upper Camp at Stonybrook is truly the tops! Upper Camp increases the challenges that you experienced at Junior Camp and continues to help you discover hidden abilities and talents that you never knew were there. At the same time, Upper Camp is about building and strengthening friendships and having a great time with your friends. This is really important because your friends and the support they give you will help you to learn and succeed with all the new things you will be trying.

One of the greatest things about Upper Camp is that it made me into a much stronger swimmer. Because we got to go swimming twice a day, I couldn’t help but improve. Every day, in one of the warm, heated pools, we had a swim lesson in the morning and a general swim in the afternoon. It was awesome, too, because the Stonybrook swim specialists, some of whom had given me lessons in Junior Camp, also really helped me to improve my strokes and become more confident in the water. By the end of the summer, I’d been swimming so much my mom said she was surprised I hadn’t grown gills.

At Upper Camp I also got to choose the other activities that I wanted to participate in. The only difficult thing was deciding which ones to do because there were a lot of cool things that I hadn’t done before and wanted to try. In the end, I spent my summer playing tennis, golf, ga-ga, hockey, beach volleyball, and softball. I also had a role in the camp play and did some interesting woodwork in the arts-and-crafts studio.

I almost forgot to mention my favorite thing about Upper Camp—the Challenge Course! The Challenge Course forces you to really see what you’re made of. But don’t worry, you’ll survive...

The Challenge Course, which is in the woods around Stonybrook, is kind of intimidating at first, but it’s really a lot of fun! As you’re working your way through over 20 different elements in the Challenge Course, you’ll see what I’m talking about. The difficulty, though, is what makes it fun.

If you’re addicted to adventure and want more of it, then Upper Camp is definitely the next step for you on the road up from Junior Camp.
